* Speak-out
at Houston City Council - Members of the Committee to Free Frances Newton
spoke in support of the Resolution for a Moratorium. The Mayor and Council
listened with respect, while limiting each of us to one minute, due to the
overwhelming numbers of people who signed up to speak on other issues. Afterward,
outside the chambers, we learned of the Supreme Court decision outlawing execution
of juveniles. Jubilation!
* Harris County Green Party Meeting - Monday evening at the Downtown Library: February
21. After the election of new steering committee members, the deep content
part of the meeting focused on the death penalty: historical roots and right
now facts in Houston. Guest speakers: Jolanda Jones, Gloria Rubac, Lee Bolton
(Nanon Williams' mother), Jewel Nelms Frances Newton's mother).
* Moratorium Resolution
introduced at Houston City Council - Gloria Rubac presented a resolution
to Mayor Bill White and the council calling for a moratorium on all Harris
County executions and calling for criminal charges for those in the crime
lab responsible for false testimony that sent innocent people to prison.
(City Council entertains public comment Tuesdays, starting
shortly after 1:30 PM, 901 Bagby between McKinney and Walker. Sign up to speak
with the City Secretary at 713-247-1840.)
* Protest and Press Conference against the HPD Crime Lab – Demonstration
from 4:00-6:00 and a Press Conference at 4:30 in front of HPD headquarters
at 1200 Travis. Speaking at the press conference were be Frances' mother,
Jewel Nelms, and Nanon Williams' mother, Lee Bolton. Both Frances and Nanon
are innocent and on death row due to incompetence and/or lies of the Crime
Lab “experts.”
* “From Lynchings to Executions: The Struggle to Abolish the Death Penalty”
- A Black History Program featuring the mothers of Frances Newton and Nanon
Williams, KPFT radio host and activist Hitaji Aziz, Gloria Rubac and Njeri
Shakur with the Texas Death Penalty Abolition Movement and many youth from
Acres Homes celebrated Black History through dance, song and poetry by death
row prisoners. In Acres Homes at Hope in Christ Church, 10310 Antoine Dr.
just north of Highway 249, from 2:00-4:00 PM.

* GreenWatch TV - Wednesday evening, March 2 from 9-10 PM,
Cable Access Channel 17. Focus of the show was on the death penalty as exercised
in Harris County. Guests were Gloria, Njeri, and Jewell. A video clip of the
protest and rally in front of the HPD Crime Lab aired, with Lee Bolton and
Jolanda Jones speaking.
* KTSU 90.9 FM - Saturday, Feb. 26 at 8:45 AM:
Hosted by Jew Don Boney, filling in; guests were Jewel Nelms (Frances' mother),
and friends.
* The Box – 97.9 FM – Sunday morning, Nov. 28 at 8:15 AM
Host City Councilwoman Ada Edwards spoke with Frances’ mother, Nanon William's
mother Lee Bolton, and took phone calls.
